October 20 - Kyoto (Nijo Castle & Arashiyama area)

Today, I went to Nijo Castle and Arashiyama.

The outer wall of Nijo Castle and the moat surrounding it.

Togetsu-kyo bridge in Arashiyama.

Boatman for hire.

Box van. They're everywhere.

Broiling ayu.

Making various things out of bamboo.

It was a hot day (25C), so I bought this multi-flavored ice cream.

Offering tea samples to passersby at this tea shop.

This thatched house is actually a machine shop.

Maiko are the Geisha apprentices.
Only Maiko would dress up in vibrant colors whereas Geisha don't.
My first glimpse of them in Kyoto.
They're rarely seen now.
It's hard work to be a Maiko.
They are trained to be performers of various Japanese arts from tea ceremony to classical Japanese music.

Notice the green tea flavored pocky sticks.
I haven't seen that in Vancouver.

My cold tofu with fish shavings, scallions, grated ginger, soya sauce and mirin (sweet rice wine).
Every time I'm in Arashiyama, I'd buy this treat and from the same shop.
